RESUMO

The study aimed to characterize patients with newly diagnosed benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and identify patterns that lead to late diagnosis of the disease. STUDY DESIGN: Simple open retrospective non-comparative study. MATERIAL AND METHODS: To determine the frequency of requests for medical care for BPH, the study analyzed medical records of 3544 patients who sought outpatient urological care at the municipal polyclinic # 26 in Novosibirsk in 2013. Outpatient medical cards of 165 patients with newly diagnosed BPH were analyzed. RESULTS: Among 3544 patients seen by the urologist of the polyclinic, 960 (27.1%) had BPH. Analysis of medical records of 165 men with newly diagnosed BPH showed that the disease was associated with age. The shortest duration of the disease (0.8+/-0.5 years) was noted in patients under 50 years old, the longest (4.7+/-2.1 years) in men over 70 years old. The smallest prostate volume was 32 ml, the largest 150 ml. The mean size of the gland naturally increased with age. The mean PSA level also naturally increased with age: from 1.1+/-0.8 ng/ml in individuals up to 50 years to 3.0+/-0.7 ng/ml in patients older than 70 years. The maximum IPSS was in the 61-70 year age group (16.7+/-5.9 points); the minimum IPSS was in the age group up to 50 years (9.5+/-3.6 points). The duration of the symptoms directly correlated with the prostate volume. At the prostate volume of 60 ml and more, symptom scores showed a 1.5 fold increase. In married patients, the mean IPSS was 13.8+/-5.4, while in single men it was 16.3+/-5.5 (p=0.008). CONCLUSION: Patients with BPH account for 27.1% of all patients seeking urological care at the polyclinic. In young men, symptom severity is lower than that in senior men. However, the elderly are more concerned about their symptoms, they have worse quality of life, and they seek medical attention earlier. Married patients are more likely to see a urologist with significantly less severe symptoms than single men.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: to elucidate predictors of cardiorespiratory complications during the early postoperative period after coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) in patients with ischemic heart disease (IHD). MATERIAL AND METHODS: We examined 180 patients with IHD (mean age 59.3+/-1.23years). Prior to surgery we assessed their clinical and functional status including state of respiratory function. Predictors of complications were determined by univariate logistic regression analysis. RESULT AND CONCLUSIONS: Early postoperative complications in this group of patients were atrial fibrillation, prolonged mechanical ventilation, and cognitive disorders. Main predictors of these complications were preoperative abnormalities of respiratory function (presence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, decreased efficiency of pulmonary ventilation), and concomitant diseases such as type 2 diabetes and multifocal atherosclerosis.

RESUMO

Photosensitizers are widely used as photodynamic therapeutic agents killing cancer cells by photooxidation of their components. Development of new effective photosensitive molecules requires profound knowledge of possible targets for reactive oxygen species, especially for its singlet form. Here we studied photooxidation of voltage-sensitive styryl dyes (di-4-ANEPPS, di-8-ANEPPS, RH-421 and RH-237) by singlet oxygen on the surface of bilayer lipid membranes commonly used as cell membrane models. Oxidation was induced by irradiation of a photosensitizer (aluminum phthalocyanine tetrasulfonate) and monitored by the change of dipole potential on the surface of the membrane. We studied the drop of the dipole potential both in the case when the dye molecules were adsorbed on the same side of the lipid bilayer as the photosensitizer (cis-configuration) and in the case when they were adsorbed on the opposite side (trans-configuration). Based on a simple model, we determined the rate of oxidation of the dyes from the kinetics of change of the potential during and after irradiation. This rate is proportional to steady-state concentration of singlet oxygen in the membrane under irradiation. Comparison of the oxidation rates of various dyes reveals that compounds of ANEPPS series are more sensitive to singlet oxygen than RH type dyes, indicating that naphthalene group is primarily responsible for their oxidation.

RESUMO

Brain studies by magnetic resonance imaging, angiography, and spectroscopy have been performed with rat strains Wistar, GC (genetic and catatonia), and PM+ (pendulum movements). Both GC and PM+ rats show similar deviations from the ancestral Wistar population in having smaller areas of the right striatum (coronal slice). The anterior horns of lateral ventricles in GC rats are smaller than in the control strain. The maximum blood flow velocity in the common carotid arteries of PM+ rats is greater. The GC and PM+ strains differ in myo-inositol level in the hippocampus. The PM+ strain is characterized by a lower taurine level in the hippocampus, which may be one of the participants regulated the predisposition to audiogenic seizures.

RESUMO

This work was performed in hypertensive ISIAH and normotensive WAG rat strains. The latter was used as a control group. The general evaluation of behavior of the ISIAH and WAG rats tested in the open field, in the light-dark test, in the sound stress test, and in the fatigue test showed that the motor and exploratory activity provoked by an unfamiliar environment was much higher in the ISIAH rats as compared to the control WAG strain. Spontaneous locomotor activity of the ISIAH rats in the home cage was significantly lower as compared to the control WAG strain. This finding suggests that the ISIAH rats are hyperreactive in an novel environment. It is concluded that the hypertensive ISIAH rats are significantly different from the control WAG rats not only in the arterial blood pressure level, but also in behavioral patterns.

RESUMO

The ordering of protons has been observed at a new storage ring, S-LSR, at Kyoto University. Abrupt jumps in the momentum spread and the Schottky noise power were observed for protons for the first time at a particle number of approximately 2000, upon applying electron cooling with electron currents of 25, 50, and 100 mA. The transition temperature was 0.17 and 1 meV in the longitudinal and transverse directions, respectively. The transverse temperature of the proton beam was much below that of electrons at the transition, which played an essential role in the ordering of protons.

RESUMO

The DELSY (Dubna Electron Synchrotron) project is under development at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research [Arkhipov et al. (2001). Nucl. Instrum. Methods, A467, 57-62; Arkhipov et al. (2001). Nucl. Instrum. Methods, A470, 1-6; Titkova et al. (2000). Proceedings of the Seventh European Particle Accelerator Conference, pp. 702-704]. It is based on an acceleration facility donated to the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research by the Institute for Nuclear and High Energy Physics (NIKHEF, Amsterdam). The NIKHEF accelerator facility consists of the linear electron accelerator MEA, which has an electron energy of 700 MeV, and the electron storage ring AmPS, with a maximum energy of 900 MeV and a beam current of 200 mA. There are three phases to the construction of the DELSY facility. Phase I will be accomplished with the construction of a complex of free-electron lasers covering continuously the spectrum from the far infrared down to the ultraviolet ( approximately 150 nm). Phase II will be accomplished with the commissioning of the storage ring DELSY. Complete commissioning of the DELSY project will take place after finishing Phase III, the construction of an X-ray free-electron laser. This phase is considered as the ultimate goal of the project; it is currently under development and is not described in this paper.
